By the time we reach adulthood, we can generally recognise whether we are an introvert or an extrovert. Most of the population identifies more with one of these over the other, and both have their benefits. For example, introverts are more likely to find success in creative careers such as art and writing. Whereas on the other hand, extroverts tend to be strong characters who excel at leading a team. But when it comes to dating, many introverts find that their shyness can get the better of them. This can be a shame, as so many introverts are dedicated and committed partners. But if you are shy, sometimes getting over that first dating hurdle can be a task in itself. If any of this sounds like you, you may be wondering how you can overcome your shyness when it comes to dating. There’s no reason why it should get in the way of you finding love, so take a look at these tips for dating as an introvert.

Don’t feel you need to commit to traditional forms of dating

Even though a lot of couples now meet online, many people still champion the more ‘traditional’ way of meeting people – that is, meeting people in real life. But just because this is on the rise again doesn’t mean that you need to conform. If the idea of chatting to a guy in a bar absolutely terrifies you, don’t feel that you need to do it just for the benefit of others. But at the same time, you may have heard way too many horror stories about online dating that have put you off for life. A happy medium for both of these is the concept of dating over the phone. It is less intrusive than face to face dating, but also less detached than talking over an online messenger. Find some free chat line numbers and get dialling, as you never know who you could end up speaking too.

Have an ice-breaker prepared

When you actually go on a date, one of the scariest things is knowing when and how to break the ice. Even the most confident of people can get nervous and seize up on a date, so it’s a good idea to prepare your ice-breaker beforehand in case both of you are tense. A good way to do this is to have something quirky about your appearance. This might be choosing to wear a statement piece of jewellery, or it could be a streak of color in your hair. Whatever it is, it gives both of you something to talk about initially to get the conversation flowing.

Bring something with you to fidget with

A dead giveaway for first date nerves is when you start to fidget. There’s nothing wrong with this in general – it is to be expected on a first date and the other person probably won’t think much of it. However, sometimes excess fidgeting can result in negative body language, such as a lack of eye contact or looking bored. In order to avoid this, bring something along that you can fidget with. This could be something such as a bracelet, or it could be a specific fidget toy. Whatever you choose, it may help you to feel more relaxed and your date can be assured that all your attention is indeed on them.
